Recently I had a discussion with a friend of mine about how working in or studying a certain profession or subject warps the way you think. Your mind is now tainted and you no longer think the way you use to think prior to entering in the field or studying the subject.

One of the issues we got to discussing was the subject of serial killers. I ask the question, what do you think and feel towards serial killers? Most of the time, people think in the following direction (not in any particular order):

1. Disgust.
2. Confusion.
3. Hatred.
4. Sympathy.

Quite a few think of serial killers in the sense of hatred or confusion. They ask the question "why would anyone be so sick to kill so many people that have not done anything to them?"

Some find them disgusting and not of the human species due to their brutal and "inhumane" actions.

However, some think of serial killers in the sense of sympathy. It comes from thinking that these people whom feel the need to kill or relieve whatever feeling that they are currently feeling must have gone through some very traumatic experiences while growing up. Rarely do you find out that serial killers had a perfect upbringing with a happy family. Most have been neglected as a child, been subject to abuse, both verbally and physically, and have been brought up in a very difficult situation. The end result? The person we see today on the news committing seriously indictable crimes.

Now, if we get a bunch of these people in the same room to have a debate about this, the debate will never end and we're likely going to end up with a lot of angry tension and ill feelings towards one another.

But I do ask, what's your view of serial killers? Has your opinion been affecting by your surroundings, your studies or your workplace?

I'll reserve my right to keep my opinion to myself. But let it be known, I think I have been tainted. Nothing is as it seems and I've realised that certain things seen on the outside is not the same as what happens behind closed doors.
